"As we have not yet received a reply to the above it occurs to our clients that their enquiry might perhaps be more appropriately addressed to you, and we accordingly have the honour so to do.

and on the 21st January 1902 Messrs. Deacon & Hastings wrote the following further letter to the Colonial Secretary:-

"Re New Territory Claims.
"U of No.1 Survey District.
"K of No.2 Survey District.
"Our clients are very anxious to hear when the Certificate of title referred to in our letter to you of the 15th instant may be expected.
"Might we therefore ask for the favour of a reply to our letter above referred to.

On the 4th February 1902 Messrs. Deacon & Hastings received the following letter from the Colonial Secretary:-
24th January, 1902.
"Gentlemen,
"I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated 15th ultimo, enquiring when a Certificate of Title would issue in connection with Claims U No.1 Survey District and K No.II Survey District, and in reply to inform you that it is not considered expedient to issue a formal Certificate of Title pending a determination of the exact amount of tax payable on the land but that it is hoped that this will be settled at no very distant date.
